How To Repurpose Your NC State Apparel Now That The Hurricanes Are In The Playoffs

It’s been 10 years since the North Carolina Hurricanes have been in the NHL playoffs. There’s a good chance you no longer fit into the Hurricanes apparel you proudly purchased after the team won the Stanley Cup in 2006. We’re here to help.

Steps:

  1. Purchase a Hurricanes decal or patch.
  2. Apply Hurricanes decal/patch to your NC State jersey. Refer to the jersey as a “sweater” or you’ll be shunned by hockey fans.
  3. Repeat the above steps for other apparel, but only refer to the jersey as a “sweater.” A hat is still a hat, a t-shirt is still a t-shirt, etc.

If you own an NC State Tradition Scarf, you may be able to strategically wrap it around your body so that it resembles a Hurricanes scarf. Alternatively, their Red & White Chevron Infinity Scarf could pass as Hurricanes apparel.

Tips For Watching the Games

If you’re reading this, you probably haven’t watched hockey in a decade. The good news is that not much has changed. The players will still be attempting to score goals by hitting the puck (a small black disk that’s roughly the size of a Skoal can) into a net (similar to a large bass fishing net) guarded by a goalkeeper (a player who is roughly the size of an offensive tackle wearing full pads).

Each team will send out five players, in addition to their goalie (offensive tackle). In most cases, three of these players will be forwards (similar to a wide receiver, running back, tight end, etc.) and two will be defensemen (similar to a free safety, cornerback, or middle linebacker). Those players will then skate around the ice rink (think football field) while holding sticks (similar to the first down marker and chain set, but without the padding and chain) that are used to control the puck (Skoal can).

Those players will jump in and out of their bench (sideline) a lot during the game, so don’t bother trying to keep up with who is on the field. Also, these games have two half times and they serve beer, so pace yourself.

Memorial Belltower Progress

The Memorial Belltower on Hillsborough Street is one step closer to being completed. When NC State began planning their bell tower as a monument to honor NC State alumni killed in World War I, it was intended that the tower would actually contain bells. Unfortunately, financial difficulties forced the university to cut back and cancel an order for a 54-bell carillon.

The plans, first drawn up in 1920, included a number of features that did not make it to the final stages, such as a bell playing console, glass clock faces, and a spiral staircase. A letter to the original architect, William Henry Deacy, notes that the university’s plan to install a “false speaker system” in place of the bell carillon was only supposed to serve as a temporary solution.

Multiple fundraising efforts have been undertaken over the last few decades. One consisted of a middle-aged woman standing near the bell tower while rattling a tin can for donations and shouting “Finish the bell tower!” as she handed a flyer to a young Marty McFly.

In 2009, students led a campaign to raise money to purchase bells for the tower. Thanks to a 2017 gift from Bill and Frances Henry, NC State can complete the 54-bell carillon and interior stairs of the Memorial Belltower.

The university issued a request for proposals to find a design-build team to manage the $6.1 million project, which also includes stabilization work and upgrades to the surrounding plaza.

We recently got a look at slightly-redacted versions of the submitted proposals along with projects they’ve worked on.

Developers Revise Plans for Apartments Near Broughton

Last summer, we reported that the Ligon Building located across the street from Broughton at 800 St. Mary’s St. would be torn down. A new four-story, 55-unit apartment building from Charlotte-based developer Selwyn Property Group would go in its place. Selwyn purchased the property in March of 2015 for just over $2 million.

Last week, Selwyn filed a brand new site plan for the complex, which has now grown to 129,639 square feet with 61 apartments. There will be two three-bedroom units, forty two-bedroom units, and 19 one-bedroom units. The existing 63-year-old office building will need to be torn down before the apartments can be built. This building houses many dental offices that we assume were frequented by Broughton students. Fortunately, our sponsor Downtown Dental is right down the road and more than happy to take in these students.

Glenwood Place Office and Retail Space

Plans for an 85 foot tall, 120,000 square foot office and retail space at Glenwood Place were unveiled last week. The plans show ground-floor retail, with at least four levels of office space above it.

The building is part of Glenwood Place, a Grubb Ventures project that was first announced more than three years ago. Glenwood Place was to have around 800 dwelling units, 900,000 square feet of office space, a 250-room hotel, and around 110,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space. In 2016, the project was scaled back to fit under the property’s current zoning conditions.

Work Begins On Chamberlain Street Apartments

The Chamberlain Street Apartments, located off Hillsborough Street, received permits valued at more than $17 million last week. Wells & Wells Construction will work on a new three-story, 53,410 square foot, 42-unit student apartment building.

There will be three one-bedrooms, 16 two-bedrooms, 14 three-bedrooms and nine “four or more bedroom” units. The site plans for 113 Chamberlain were filed around the same time as plans for a slightly larger complex nearby at 102 Logan Court. It appears that demolition permits have been issued for the existing structure, and that permits for the apartments have been applied for but not issued.

Wine Bar Coming to The Dillon

Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar, a chain of Spanish tapas eateries, will soon open its first North Carolina location at The Dillon. Permits valued at $807,596 were issued last week to the KBE Building Corporation for the new restaurant at 430 W. Martin Street.

The ZEN Succulent Coming to Wilmington Street

Popular Durham terrarium and plant craft business The ZEN Succulent will soon open a new location in downtown Raleigh. The company announced plans for the new shop at 208 S. Wilmington last week.

The space was formerly home to Moon and Lola, which announced plans in March to close both its Raleigh and Charleston, SC retail locations to focus more on e-commerce. The 1,238 square foot space should be filled with terrariums, plants, and gifts by the end of July.

Kimbap Closing This Weekend

Marbles Museum will soon be able to offer an even wider array of experiences to its visitors, thanks to a recent purchase of the adjacent property at 207 East Hargett Street. The two-story, 15,658 sq ft building was built in 1950 and previously owned by the Longleaf School of the Arts. Marbles purchased the building from MDO Holdings for $3.1 million. We’ve been told that Owner and CEO, Michael Olander, Jr., passed up multiple opportunities for more lucrative buyers, so we’re assuming he and the folks at MDO Holdings probably received free lifetime IMAX passes as part of the deal. Marbles has said that new construction will likely not begin until 2020.

Expansion Continues Near Dock 1053

In January, we reported that Gordon Grubb, who developed the Dock 1053 project on Whitaker Mill Road, had purchased an adjacent 19-acre site at the intersection of Atlantic and Whitaker Mill known as Peden Steel. But wait, there’s more.

Wake County real estate records indicate that a subsidiary of Grubb Ventures recently purchased another nearby property for about $5.5 million: the 4.64 acre site at 2315 Atlantic Avenue.

The site is now home to a 127,875 square-foot warehouse built in 1973. Grubb Ventures has not yet announced its formal plans for the site, but we imagine its redevelopment will line up nicely with their plans to revitalize the Atlantic Avenue corridor. When Grubb purchased the Peden Steel property in January for $10 million they announced plans to develop a project similar to Dock 1053, which houses a brewery, a distillery, a neon art studio, and more.

Shelton’s Furniture Is Gone Again And So Is Its Old Building

Earlier this year, Shelton’s Furniture, a beloved Raleigh furniture store, moved from its location on West Morgan Street to make way for a new 150-room hotel and parking deck. Shelton’s found a home in Clayton, but realized ITB residents wouldn’t drive that far for furniture. So on June 1st, Shelton’s returned ITB and moved to a spot near Five Points on Bickett Boulevard. Sadly, it was announced last week that they would be going out of business.

Friend of the media empire, Ashton Smith, grabbed a picture of the demolition at the West Morgan spot last week.

FNB Tower Video

Commercial real estate is so hot right now. So hot, in fact, that new buildings require their own movie trailers. A few months after announcing plans to open a new headquarters in downtown Raleigh, First National Bank has released a video rendering (movie trailer) of the new 22-story residential and office development. Located at 501 Fayetteville Street, the 22-story FNB Tower will sit adjacent to City Plaza, and offer more than 150,00 square feet of Class-A office space, 240 residential units and street-level retail. First National itself will occupy about 40,000 square feet of that Class-A office space.

Hook & Cleaver Coming to Morgan Street Food Hall

The latest tenant for downtown’s Morgan Street Food Hall & Market has been announced, and they’re coming to us all the way from Fuquay-Varina. Hook & Cleaver on Morgan will feature seafood, fresh meats, and prepared foods. This will be the second location of owner Joseph Fasy’s popular restaurant, which got its start in downtown Fuquay in 2015.

The new location will be joined by more than 60 dining and retail outlets, which Morgan Street’s owners, Hibernian Hospitality, promise will offer a range of “high-quality, chef-driven specialty foods.” The Morgan Street Food Hall now has commitments from about 35 restaurants and other vendors. Originally set to open this summer, Hibernian announced last week that Morgan Street will be opening in early 2018.

StateView Hotel

Set to open next month on NC State’s Centennial Campus, Marriott’s StateView Hotel will be accompanied by a five-story parking garage. W.M. Jordan, the project’s general contractor, will handle construction of the 117,940 square-foot parking garage. Interestingly enough, the permits we saw also describe the garage as a “park and ride” location for the State Farmers Market, which is about a mile from the new hotel.

The StateView Hotel is part of the Marriott Autograph Hotel collection: independent hotels that utilize the Marriott Branding. You can check out one of the most over-the-top movie trailers for a hotel we’ve ever seen. Be sure to turn the volume on, as it sounds like you’re about to ride into the battle of the bastards as you tour the lobby, pool terrace, and other parts of the hotel.

Work Now Underway on Wahlburgers

Just one week after local restaurateur Zack Medford challenged superstar Mark Wahlberg to a burger cook-off contest, contractors were given the go-ahead to begin work on the newest location of the actor’s popular burger chain Wahlburgers.

Permits for this particular project had been in limbo since early May. According to the permits, the 3,680 square-foot restaurant will be allowed a maximum occupancy of 103 people at any given time, although it is unknown how many of those 103 will be members of the Wahlberg family. Wahlburgers will operate on Fayetteville Street in the former home of The Oxford.

NY Bagels Coming to Shoppes of Greenway

The Shoppes at Greenway on Ramble Way in North Raleigh will soon be adding a bagel shop to their mix of offerings, as permits were issued last week for a $28,000 fit-out for NY Bagels. Although we were unable to confirm whether this new shop is associated with Raleigh’s best bagel spot, NY Bagels & Deli, the name does give hope that Raleigh residents will soon have greater access to bagels made the New York way.

The Rock Is Totally Playing Football For NC State Next Year

In a surprising turn of events, The Rock has decided to give up his acting, producing, and wrestling career in order to return to college and play football. The news came as The Rock sent a congratulatory tweet to his friend and former college roommate, Kevin Patrick, for being named the new defensive line coach at NC State. NC State’s Twitter account followed up by inviting The Rock to come cheer for Coach Patrick and the Wolfpack from the sidelines. Once again, NC State blew an opportunity to recruit a high profile prospect like The Rock. Fortunately, The Rock replied that he wanted no part of the sidelines, and that if he were to attend, he’d suit up and play.

Therefore, Dwayne The Rock Johnson is now a member of the NC State football team. I can already see The Rock playing defensive end, Rock Bottom-ing opposing quarterbacks and dropping The People’s Elbow on running backs. He’ll obviously get flagged for removing his helmet to show off The People’s Eyebrow. He’ll pause, look at the flag, glare at the ref, walk to midfield, pull out a microphone and say:

“Finally…The Rock has come back to college football for the millions AND MILLIONS of fans at NC State. As The People’s Champion it’s been far too long since I’ve been out on this field. So Mr. Referee, please, tell me what this flag is for.”

The referee will start to reply, but before getting a word out The Rock will cut him off.

“IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT THIS FLAG IS FOR! Listen up, jabroni, take this flag, shine it up real nice, and stick it straight up your candy ass. The Rock is the most electrifying man in sports entertainment and doesn’t get flagged. So know your role and shut your mouth before I lay the smackdown, if ya smeeelllllllllllllllaalalaa what The Rock……is cookin’!!!”

This would happen at least once a game, causing opponents to forfeit out of fear. NC State could easily win the national title next year with the addition of The Rock to an already impressive defensive line.

Additionally, this will be a great script for a movie. Superstar former football player finds a loophole in the eligibility rules and goes to play for his college roommate, who happens to be the defensive line coach at a struggling program. Maybe The Rock uncovers some sort of scandal while playing a game against UNC or FSU and it turns into a buddy cop comedy, with multiple sequels. If they can make EIGHT Fast and the Furious movies, we can make this happen.

I tried to interview The Rock on Twitter for this story, but he has yet to reply.

NC State officials could not be reached for comment, as they were too busy trying to contain an unrelated dumpster fire.

ABC11’s Mark Armstrong broke the news of my news late last night, which makes this even more official.

This section is for my Mom and her Garden Club friends who don’t know who The Rock is. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson played college football for the University of Miami, where he won a national championship in 1991. He then followed in his grandfather and father’s footsteps and became a professional wrestler. He starred on the show that aired on Monday night that you didn’t want me to watch when I was 12 years old. In the late 1990s, he gained popularity in the WWF (now WWE) as “The Rock” where he won a ton of totally real championships. Many of his peers describe him as the biggest star in the history of professional wrestling. He successfully crossed over into acting in the early 2000s and has become one of the biggest stars on the planet.
